LOUISIANA RED HOT RECORDS

Posts in the SINGER/SONGWRITER category

Representing the best music from the birthplace of modern American Music, Louisiana Red Hot Records is the “for us, by us” indie record label that serves as the home for the next generation of Louisiana legends.

In our 22nd year, Red Hot is experiencing a rebirth and celebrating our new team’s first full year of releases with a “Best of 2018” compilation. The compilation includes tracks from legendary Grammy winners Cyril Neville and Dr. John, as well as selections from the soundtrack of the powerful documentary One Note At A Time, which tells the story of the New Orleans Musician’s Clinic, founded to heal the musical community after Hurricane Katrina. Also featuring a broad range of emerging artists like New Orleans’ Queen of Neo-Soul Erica Falls, two-time Grammy nominee Sean Ardoin, “Future Funk” phenom Water Seed, hard-hitting funk/rock outfit Noisewater, and poignant singer/songwriter Lilli Lewis, the release will be available on all digital platforms including iTunes, Amazon.com, Google Play and Spotify starting on Friday, December 14th, 2018.

“I listen to her when I want to be high on my soul.” – Lilli Lewis fan

Set against the buoyant backdrop of the New Orleans bon vivant, “The Henderson Sessions” is an exquisitely intimate self-portrait with Lilli Lewis’s vocals set to the barest of piano accompaniment. The record was co-produced by Lewis alongside James “Jimbo” Walsh (HBO’s Treme) and Mark Bingham (Allen Ginsberg, REM, Sun-Ra) at a studio built in a country home in Henderson, LA that was once used as refuge for Walsh’s musical community after Hurricane Katrina. When the three teamed up to demo songs for a full band album, they found the songs had something useful to say in their most raw, earnest, and primitive incarnation.

Award-winning singer/songwriter Lilli Lewis grew up on a dirt road on the outskirts of Athens, GA. She is the daughter of a southern minister and a Chicago reared civil rights activist, and her bent towards social justice is reflected in her music and stage show. The prolific writer, composer, pianist, and producer has been composing music since she started playing piano at the age of three. Lewis is known for her powerful vocals and progressive message. The classically trained “folk-rock diva” is a sought after featured performer on main stages across the United States and abroad. In 2017, feminist folk trio The Malvinas recorded Lilli’s “O, Let Your Light Shine Bright” (Louisiana Red Hot, 2016) on God Bless the Grass (Soona Songs). Lewis made New Orleans her home in 2013 where she performs regularly as a soloist and with her acoustic soul orchestra, The Lilli Lewis Project (LLP). Lewis is also a current member of sousaphone master Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove.

Emerging Psychedelic folk-rock and soul diva Lilli Lewis unleashes her national debut on Louisiana Red Hot with her latest single “O, Let Your Light Shine Bright.” Lewis is an award-winning pianist, composer, and songstress of rare grace and grit who conjures the likes of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Mama Thornton, Odetta, and Janis Joplin when in full gear. The Athens, Georgia native first made her presence known in New Orleans through “The Shiz,” her indie rock and soul band known as the Alabama Shakes of the Northshore. Lewis made her home here in New Orleans in 2014, and immediately began performing with some of the city’s favorites including Betty Shirley, Sharon Martin, and sousaphone maestro Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove.

In 2016, following an independent release of a new EP Orange Music, Vol. 1, Lewis teamed up with Louisiana Red Hot Records for national debut release with her latest single “O, Let Your Light Shine Bright,” making her the only woman currently represented among Louisiana Red Hot’s esteemed roster. Co-produced by Lewis with TJ Barends, the single is a warm and unassuming invitation that sinks easily beneath the skin while its B side “Walk Upon Water” is an all-out festival style jam complete with a saxophone chorus and searing guitar work.

With vocals said to have “enough energy to power a large city,” Lewis brings her songs of empowerment and personal responsibility to ever widening audiences, never failing to deliver “innovative, soulful music that will never go out of style.” www.lillilewis.com

Colin Lake - One Thing Album Cover“Songs as sturdy as his fleet-fingered, blues-based guitar skills”
– Keith Spera, Times Picayune

While scores of talented young musicians have flocked to New Orleans in the years following Hurricane Katrina, among the most outstanding is Pacific Northwest native Colin Lake, whose passion for life and innate feel for roots music makes him perfectly suited to the culture of the Crescent City. Lake quickly established himself as a subtle yet dynamic slide guitar master, performing at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, Austin City Limits Fest, Hangout Festival, the Key West Songwriters Festival and French Quarter Festival. His soulful vocals and searing touch on the lap steel reveal an affinity for the works of countless blues greats, but his knack for original song craft truly sets him apart.

Lake shines in his Louisiana Red Hot debut, One Thing That’s For Sure. Produced by Eric Heigle (Arcade Fire, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Givers, Dr. John). He is joined by the cream of the young crop of southern musicians; including Luther Dickenson (North Mississippi All Stars), Maggie Koerner (Galactic), jazz vocalist Sasha Masakowski and actress/singer Topsy Chapman (12 Years a Slave). Paired with a band that includes veteran keyboardist Marc Adams (Eric Lindell, Tab Benoit, Marva Wright), bassist Bill Richard, and drummer Erik Golson, Lake delivers an album that moves from sunny summer jams to powerful love songs, haunting instrumentals and dark, scorching rockers. Fans of roots music, blues, soul and jam bands will find much to love here.

Day Ain't Done Album Cover“Sekhani’s alternative country gumbo of guitar, Dobro, fiddle, mandolin and more can hang with the best of them” – Herman Fuselier, Music Writer

Known as the leader of the fiery, rockabilly gospel band, the Mercy Brothers, or for his twenty years in the Austin music scene, prodigal son Kevin Sekhani has finally returned to native Lafayette, LA. The result? …a superb national solo debut, “Day Ain’t Done.”

“Day Ain’t Done” is Sekhani’s ode to the working man and their concerns, further enhancing his reputation as one of the outstanding songwriters in the Deep South. This celebration of cane cutters and oil field roughnecks is backed by a crackerjack band of John Mellencamp, Patty Griffin and Son Volt veterans. Equally at home in the dance halls of South Louisiana, or the honky-tonks of the Hill Country, Hank Williams would be proud!
