On Saturday, July 14 The Recording Academy™ will honor its 2018 Special Merit Awards recipients with “GRAMMY Salute To Music Legends®.” Among those honored will be the likes of Neil Diamond, Emmylou Harris, Tina Turner, and Uptown Ruler himself, Cyril Neville, being celebrated for his work with The Meters. All will occur the day after Neville’s 5-disc box set of his independently produced “Endangered Species” catalog will be released on his son Omari Neville’s nascent label World Order Records, distributed by Louisiana Red Hot.

2018 has proven to be a banner year for the youngest among the Neville Brothers which started with Cyril being awarded OffBeat Magazine’s “Best Male Vocalist” prize. The release represents Cyril and his progeny taking back full control of his career and music, which is plenty to celebrate. The box set includes sought after titles produced by Cyril that were previously unavailable, and which feature a host of Louisiana legends on record. The companion compilation of “Essential Recordings,” curated by LRHR, has already charted on Amazon’s Top 20 Blues releases and is receiving stellar reviews and features the brand new single “Love Has Got To Win” whose exclusive debut will appear on www.relix.com on the day of the album release.

LILLI LEWIS: The Henderson Sessions

Set against the buoyant backdrop of the New Orleans bon vivant, “The Henderson Sessions” is an exquisitely intimate self-portrait with Lilli Lewis’s vocals set to the barest of piano accompaniment. The record was co-produced by Lewis alongside James “Jimbo” Walsh (HBO’s Treme) and Mark Bingham (Allen Ginsberg, REM, Sun-Ra) at a studio built in a country home in Henderson, LA that was once used as refuge for Walsh’s musical community after Hurricane Katrina. When the three teamed up to demo songs for a full band album, they found the songs had something useful to say in their most raw, earnest, and primitive incarnation.

​Award-winning singer/songwriter Lilli Lewis grew up on a dirt road on the outskirts of Athens, GA. She is the daughter of a southern minister and a Chicago reared civil rights activist, and her bent towards social justice is reflected in her music and stage show. The prolific writer, composer, pianist, and producer has been composing music since she started playing piano at the age of three. Lewis is known for her powerful vocals and progressive message. The classically trained “folk-rock diva” is a sought after featured performer on main stages across the United States and abroad. In 2017, feminist folk trio The Malvinas recorded Lilli’s “O, Let Your Light Shine Bright” (Louisiana Red Hot, 2016) on God Bless the Grass (Soona Songs). Lewis made New Orleans her home in 2013 where she performs regularly as a soloist and with her acoustic soul orchestra, The Lilli Lewis Project (LLP). Lewis is also a current member of sousaphone master Kirk Joseph’s Backyard Groove.

which Glen David frequently appears as himself). But where Shorty might be arguably the better trombonist, Glen David wows as the superior vocalist/entertainer. And while Shorty leans toward contemporary jazz these days, Glen David’s Redemption stays closer to his roots – cooking R&B, Gospel, Blues and Jazz, into a rich, dark Creole gumbo of soulful, rocking Funk, delivered with the seaering energy of a New Orleans heat wave.
